INTERIOR DESIGNER- Norfolk, VA BACKGROUND ON THE POSITION: The Interior Designer will be responsible for providing timely, professional architectural support, services and consultation for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands. KEYS FOR SUCCESS: • Bachelor's Degree from a CIDA accredited Interior Design program and minimum of 5 years of interior design experience including at least 1 year working on Capital Improvement projects for a Federal Agency. NOTE: Candidates with less than 5 years interior design experience of increasing complexity after receiving their degree will not be considered. • A minimum of 5 years of professional interior design code compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, is required. • National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification is highly desirable. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: • Provides independent, timely and professional specialized interior design support, services and consultation for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands, including minor works projects, specific projects, special projects, military construction (MILCON), demolition, maintenance, space utilization and facilities development. Participates in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborates with engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with specific project requirements. • The position provides a broad range of interior design services to all activities and tenants. This includes a large number of customer activities with varied missions, dispersed over a sizable geographical region with numerous facility types, ranging from administrative and housing facilities to very complex industrial and operational facilities and equipment. This position will involve innovative interior designs of new facilities as well as the maintenance and repair of existing facilities. Such services are complicated and intensified by the following factors: aging and obsolete facilities; customer activity mission changes; and variable funding sources among the customer activities • Responsible for the preparation of detailed interior design solutions that meet functional and aesthetic requirements, development of plans using AutoCAD, interior finish and furniture specifications, furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) packages, interior finish packages, and cost estimates in support of in-house and A/E design-bid-build and design/build projects for a wide range of projects. Typical design projects include Naval Shore Facilities, including; • multistory administration facilities • quarters • hospitals • dining facilities • housing • recreational facilities • operational and support facilities • training facilities • industrial shops • and a very wide diversity of other new and existing structures and facilities. • Apply knowledge and skill to research and evaluate interior finish systems and FF&E in the development of interior design projects and specifications. • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the latest commercial interior finish materials and furnishings. • Produce results of research in writing and evaluate recommendations and facts. • Prepare and give oral presentations of proposed designs and other related topics. • Demonstrate knowledge of related engineering disciplines such as architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection to assure that areas of overlapping responsibilities receive proper design consideration and that total project objectives are met. ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor's Degree from a CIDA accredited Interior Design program and minimum of 5 years of interior design experience including at least 1 year working on Capital Improvement projects for a Federal Agency. NOTE: Candidates with less than 5 years interior design experience of increasing complexity after receiving their degree will not be considered. • Completion of a course of studies with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree for interior design, supplemented by significant work experience and/or research in commercial interior design, is required. • A minimum of 5 years of professional interior design code compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, is required. • National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification is highly desirable. • Requires ability to supplement standard practices and adapt techniques to solve a wide variety of technical issues. • Requires the ability to apply innovative theories and state of the art methods to technical principles, practices, and problems not resolvable through conventional methods. • NOTE: The possession of an Interior Design License or NCIDQ certification is considered demonstration of this ability. • Knowledge, as demonstrated by recent relevant experience, to prepare interior designs that meet functional and aesthetic requirements, and produce final working drawings for facilities, such as multi-story office buildings, operational facilities, personnel support facilities, industrial type shops, housing, and other facilities normally found on military installations. • Knowledge of interior design concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the full range of duties concerned with the design, layout, and construction of facilities. • Knowledge and skill to use computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, electronic mail, Internet, and database type software, as well as Specs Intact word processing software, and cost estimating software. • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer aided design and drafting software and hardware used in the preparation and presentation of concept designs and the preparation of final working drawings. • Knowledge of related engineering disciplines (i.e., architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and fire protection) to assure that areas of overlapping responsibilities receive proper design consideration and that total project objectives are met. • Ability to produce results of analysis in writing and the ability to consolidate the findings of others, and evaluate recommendations and facts. • Ability to make oral presentations of proposed designs and results of studies. • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and motivate and lead individuals of a variety of backgrounds. • Knowledge of and full compliance with Safety Policy and Guidance, and use of personal protective equipment.
