About this role

JOB DESCRIPTION BELOW Location: Chicago, IL (In-person availability preferred) Company: JATES, Design+Build About Us: JATES, Design+Build is a small dynamic, design+build firm specializing in high-quality residential projects in Chicago. We’re known for creating unique, tailored designs that enhance the way people live in their homes. Our team values creativity, collaboration, and providing an exceptional client experience. We’re currently looking to bring in an Independent Part-Time Designer to collaborate on a project-by-project basis. This is a great opportunity for an experienced designer looking for flexible work with a growing team. Position Overview: We are seeking a talented and motivated residential designer to join us as an independent contractor. In this role, you will be responsible for collaborating with our team on various residential redesign and build projects, producing high-quality design drawings, and working with clients to bring their visions to life. While much of the work can be done remotely, we highly prefer candidates who are available for occasional in-person client meetings and site visits in Chicago. Responsibilities: • Collaborate with the JATES team and clients to develop creative design solutions for residential spaces, including kitchens, bathrooms, and decks. • Produce detailed design drawings, 3D renderings, and presentations to communicate design concepts to clients and contractors. • Manage project timelines, ensuring deliverables are completed on time and meet client expectations. • Participate in client meetings, site visits, and design presentations as needed (in-person preferred). • Ensure smooth communication between the design team, project managers, and contractors. • Work on a flexible, project-by-project basis, adjusting workload as needed. Qualifications: • Proven experience in residential interior design, preferably with a strong portfolio of completed projects. • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, or similar tools (own software license required). • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Excellent communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts clearly. • Availability to work 20-30 hours per week on a flexible basis, depending on project needs. • In-person availability for Chicago-area client meetings and site visits preferred. Compensation: • Project-based or hourly, depending on the scope of work. • This is an independent contractor role, and the designer is responsible for their own software and tools. Why Join Us: • Flexible work schedule with the opportunity to grow alongside a forward-thinking, creative team. • A collaborative, team-oriented environment with a focus on delivering high-quality work and client satisfaction. • Opportunity to work on exciting residential projects in the vibrant Chicago market.
