Role Overview
The Designer is responsible for developing and managing the design phase of residential remodeling projects, with a focus on kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and room additions. This role combines spatial planning, material selection, and technical drafting with direct client interaction and construction collaboration. It requires strong visual design skills, a thorough understanding of construction methods, and the ability to move projects from concept to build-ready documents.

Core Responsibilities
Client & Site Engagement
• Conduct in-home consultations and site measurements to gather necessary data.
• Interpret client needs, preferences, and functional requirements into initial design concepts.
• Translate scope and budget considerations into feasible design solutions.
Design Execution
• Create floor plans, elevations, and 3D visualizations using design software.
• Develop finish palettes, select materials, and prepare presentation packages.
• Adjust plans based on client feedback and evolving project requirements.
Documentation & Specifications
• Produce detailed construction drawings including cabinet layouts, electrical plans, and plumbing schematics.
• Specify products and materials including cabinetry, countertops, fixtures, flooring, and lighting.
• Coordinate with suppliers to confirm availability, pricing, and lead times.
Project Coordination
• Review designs with project managers and estimators for feasibility and alignment with budgets.
• Maintain communication with construction staff during pre-construction and active build phases.
• Maintain regular communication with customer during pre-construction and active build phases; provide oversight on job site during key phases of construction. This includes, but is not limited to, start of construction, cabinetry installation, tile layout, countertop template, and any specialty construction.
• Assist with changes or substitutions during construction and provide updated documentation as needed.
• Accountability for writing change orders to cover cost for materials and mark up for any changes to materials scope from the time of sign off through ordering. Work with Project Manager and/or Estimator to be sure all labor associated with said change order is accounted for in the cost of the change.
• Handling communication with the customer regarding any associated change orders.

Required Skills and Knowledge
• Proficiency in design and drafting software (e.g., SketchUp, Chief Architect, AutoCAD, Revit).
• Strong knowledge of residential building codes, construction techniques, and NKBA guidelines.
• Effective communication skills for both client interaction and internal coordination.
• Experience managing multiple projects under tight timelines with accuracy and detail.

Preferred Background
• Degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field.
• 3+ years of professional experience in residential design, preferably in a design-build setting.
• Familiarity with remodeling-specific challenges such as structural retrofits, existing condition constraints, and phased installations.

This role requires a balance of creative thinking and technical execution, along with the ability to guide clients through the design process while ensuring alignment with construction capabilities and business objectives.
