Director of Interior Design

Job Summary We are seeking an exceptional Design Director to lead and elevate the interior design division of SmartDesign. This role is ideal for a visionary leader with a refined design aesthetic, technical expertise, and a strategic mindset who thrives on mentoring teams, managing complex projects, and strengthening client relationships. As Design Director , you will oversee the creative and operational success of SmartDesign’s projects, ensuring the highest level of design execution while keeping projects aligned with budgets, timelines, and client expectations . You will work closely with senior leadership, designers, architects, and construction teams to maintain seamless coordination across all phases of the design-build process. Beyond execution, you will play a critical role in business development, industry networking, and SmartDesign’s brand positioning , helping to attract new clients, expand industry relationships, and further establish SmartDesign as a premier firm in NYC. This is a high-impact, leadership role for someone looking to take full ownership of the interior design department while having a direct influence on the firm’s growth and long-term success. Key Responsibilities 1. Creative Leadership & Design DirectionSet the creative vision and design standards for all interior projects, ensuring alignment with SmartDesign’s brand. Lead and oversee multiple high-end residential and commercial projects simultaneously. Review and approve all design concepts, material selections, and technical drawings . Drive innovation and problem-solving , ensuring that every project balances aesthetics, functionality, and feasibility. 2. Team Leadership & Mentorship Manage and mentor a team of senior, mid-level, and associate designers , fostering a culture of growth and excellence . Conduct design reviews, team training sessions, and performance evaluations to elevate team capabilities. Ensure designers meet project schedules, deliverables, and milestones , holding them accountable for deadlines and quality. 3. Project Oversight & Execution Ensure all projects remain on schedule and within budget , optimizing resources and efficiency. Work collaboratively with architects, contractors, and project managers to align design intent with construction feasibility. Maintain rigorous quality control throughout the design process, ensuring SmartDesign’s high standards are met. 4. Client & Industry Engagement Act as the primary client liaison for large-scale projects, ensuring strong relationships and high client satisfaction. Represent SmartDesign at industry events, networking functions, and design conferences to expand visibility and business opportunities. Identify strategic business development opportunities , helping attract new clients and deepen relationships with existing ones. 5. Business Development & Firm Growth Collaborate with leadership to develop long-term business strategies for expanding SmartDesign’s presence in the market. Work alongside the marketing and sales teams to create content, case studies, and proposals showcasing SmartDesign’s expertise. Contribute to SmartDesign’s overall growth , identifying new services, efficiency improvements, and revenue opportunities.
