Job Summary
The Design Director is a key leadership role responsible for elevating the creative output, efficiency, and overall performance of JED’s design team. This person will report to the CEO and lead by example as the firm’s senior-most designer while providing clear direction, mentorship, and structure to a team of young designers.
This role requires a balance of creative vision, technical expertise, operational thinking, and leadership presence. The ideal candidate is highly organized, collaborative, detail-oriented, and deeply committed to delivering work that meets JED’s aesthetic, functional, and quality standards.
Responsibilities
• Manage, mentor, and support the design team to ensure clarity, efficiency, and consistent performance.
• Manage budgets for design profit centers
• Provide ongoing feedback, training, and creative direction to grow the team’s technical and design capabilities.
• Lead weekly design check-ins, reviews, and creative sessions.
• Establish and refine workflows, design processes, and best practices.
• Oversee and approve concept development, space planning, finish selections, design boards, and client presentations.
• Lead the team in sampling, materials sourcing, and vendor communication; Introduce new ideas, materials, vendors, and design approaches to keep the team inspired and forward-thinking.
• Serve as the lead designer on assigned high-level projects, from concept through completion.
• Produce and/or oversee technical drawings, specifications, and documentation.
• Partner with construction teams, architects, and trades to ensure design intent is executed flawlessly.
• Support project managers with clarity, timely decisions, and detailed design direction.
• Quarterly financial audit of department and reporting out to team of designers and CEO.
• Maintain timelines and ensure design deliverables are completed on schedule.
• Collaborate with leadership to support accurate estimating, budgeting, and profitability.
• Identify bottlenecks, improve processes, and streamline workflows for a more efficient studio.
• Ensure the materials library, resources, and digital assets are current and well-organized.
• Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and high-performance studio culture.
Experience
Required:
• 6–10+ years of professional interior design experience
• Strong technical proficiency (CAD, Revit, or similar drafting software)
• Extensive experience managing multiple budgets and financial reporting
• Expertise in space planning, millwork, finish selections, FF&E, and technical documentation
• Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading designers
• Strong presentation skills and client-facing communication
• Highly organized with excellent time management
Preferred:
• Experience in residential new construction and large-scale remodels
• Experience working in the retail industry
• Experience working within a design firm or studio environment
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, growing business
• Familiarity with custom furniture, soft goods, and cabinetry design
