About ModernRugs Founded in 1999, ModernRugs was among the first companies to bring rugs to the internet. What began as an online retailer has evolved into a custom rug design studio, shaped over more than two decades by the architects, interior designers, developers, and procurement teams who challenged us to create what couldn't be found elsewhere. Today, we partner with some of the world's most respected designers and firms to develop made-to-order rugs for hospitality, workplace, retail, healthcare, luxury residential, and cultural environments. Every piece begins somewhere different: a drawing, photograph, material, architectural detail, historic reference, color story, or completely original idea. Our job is to figure out what it can become. Behind that work is a global network of artisans and manufacturing partners we've worked alongside for decades, allowing our designers to think creatively while understanding how an idea will ultimately become a physical object. ModernRugs is entering a new creative chapter, and we're looking for a designer who wants to help shape it. The Role We're looking for a Designer — Custom Rugs & Textiles with a strong visual instinct, technical curiosity, and genuine excitement about turning ideas into things that exist in the world. You'll work closely with our founder, project management team, clients, and manufacturing partners to develop original custom rug concepts for some of the world's leading architecture and interior design firms. Some projects begin with highly developed client artwork. Others begin with almost nothing. You'll interpret inspiration, explore composition and color, create original artwork, develop digital renderings and proposals, and help determine how an idea can actually be manufactured. The craft itself can be taught. Taste is harder to teach. We're less concerned with whether you've spent your career designing rugs than whether you have a strong eye, command of design fundamentals, curiosity about materials, and the confidence to develop and defend a good idea. What You'll Do Develop original custom rug designs and interpret client-provided artwork and inspirationTranslate architectural, interior, material, and visual references into compelling design directionsCreate artwork, digital renderings, presentations, and client proposalsDevelop colorways, compositions, patterns, textures, and design variationsPrepare production-ready artwork and specifications in collaboration with our manufacturing partnersWork closely with project managers to ensure design development aligns with budgets, schedules, performance requirements, and client expectationsReview samples and strike-offs and recommend refinements before productionCommunicate directly with our global manufacturing partners throughout design developmentLearn the technical characteristics of fibers, constructions, manufacturing techniques, scale, color, and performanceExplore new materials, processes, technologies, and creative approachesUse Photoshop and emerging AI-powered creative tools thoughtfully to expand possibilities and accelerate the design processHelp improve the systems connecting design, project management, sampling, and productionDevelop increasing creative ownership as your knowledge of the product and business growsWhen appropriate, participate in important client presentations, design meetings, and travel alongside sales and leadershipWho You Are You notice things. You can hear another perspective, reconsider an idea, and make the work better. You understand that creative work for clients exists within real constraints, and sometimes those constraints produce the most interesting answer. You're also interested in what technology is doing to design. We don't want someone using AI simply because it's new. We want someone curious enough to experiment with new tools and discerning enough to know when the result isn't good. You can look at ten possibilities, choose one, and explain why. What We're Looking For Professional experience in graphic design, textile design, surface design, interior design, fashion, visual design, or another relevant creative disciplineA portfolio demonstrating strong aesthetic judgment, composition, color, and visual problem-solvingStrong Adobe Photoshop skillsExperience with Illustrator or other visual design software is valuableInterest in and comfort experimenting with contemporary AI-assisted creative toolsAbility to move between conceptual exploration and detailed executionStrong communication and collaboration skillsAbility to manage multiple design assignments and deadlinesCuriosity about materials, manufacturing, architecture, interiors, and physical environmentsExperience with rugs, textiles, flooring, hospitality, or interior products is highly desirable but not requiredWe can teach you rugs.
