About this role
The Design Department Manager is responsible for the overall management of the design department, architectural and interior design staff, and is responsible for meeting or exceeding goals set forth by the Leadership Team.
The Design Department Manager will collaborate with all other employees as a team and effectively lead all phases of the design process to meet project objectives, budgets... and deadlines.
By employing the mission and core values of CRD, the Design Department Manager will represent CRD in various client interactions/communications and remain a trusted source of leadership for both staff and clients.
As a seasoned professional, the Design Manager will uphold the standards and policies of CRD, the design process and design deliverables, and will maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of residential building code, permitting requirements in King County and industry-standard practices for architect, design and construction.
Responsibilities
• Ensure that CRD clients have an exceptional experience by adhering to our proven design process and CRD systems.
• Meet or exceed department goals for revenue, securing Construction Agreements, and meeting deadlines in order to meet the Production Schedule.
• Oversee, train, mentor and facilitate excellence in all members of the design team including Interior Designers, Architects, architectural designers, and CAD Drafter/Design internship positions.
• Ensure the department delivers high-quality design deliverables by redlining plan sets, specifications, finish schedules, and subcontractor bids.
• Work with Production Manager and Project Managers to ensure viability of design for construction.
• Constantly seek ways to improve our product both in design and production in order to fulfill the company mission.
• Maintain a working knowledge of residential building code, permitting requirements in King County and industry standards. Provide additional training to design department staff as needed.
• Meet resourcing and staffing needs by hiring design department employees with final approval from Leadership in order to meet the demands of the business.
• Review design department time sheets for accuracy and approve client billing in coordination with the Bookkeeper in a timely manner.
• Assist Production Manager and Estimator with project estimates.
• Participate in marketing events (i.e., Tours, Home Shows), the CRD podcast, blog posts, etc. as well as other company events (i.e., all-company meetings, seminars, etc.).
• Answer the telephone as necessary.
• Conduct yourself in a professional, positive, and courteous manner always.
• Foster positive communications and relationships with clients, vendors, and team members.
• Work with other Department Managers in keeping with CRD mission & core values.
• Adhere to company policies and procedures.
• Actively participate and lead meetings as requested.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Five (5) year degree in Architecture, Interior Design or similar area of study is highly desired. Some coursework and/or years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience designing with a practical knowledge of residential remodeling, creating floor plans and drawing elevations and perspectives highly desired.
• Ability to successfully lead a team of unique individuals while fostering shared vision and teamwork.
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborative, effective working relationships with managers, peers, clients and other employees.
• Proven track record managing a team or department as well as experience working with clients.
• Excellent communication skills, personable demeanor and sense of humor.
• Ability to set deadlines and hold staff accountable for meeting the demands of the business.
• Creative imagination and practical understanding of construction.
• Proficient in CAD Drafting, hand drawing skills and good “design sense” for space planning and finishes selections.
• Strong knowledge of appropriate English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and word usage and ability to communicate concepts, thoughts and ideas both written and orally to others.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and state required insurance.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Frequent standing, walking and sitting.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds.
• Occasional lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds.
• Must be able to work at computer or desk area for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to use a computer and see color.
• Ability to travel to job sites as needed.
