About this role

Cissell Design Studio is a boutique design studio based in historic Charleston, South Carolina, founded by Anthony J. Cissell. We work on a wide range of project types and scales in both new construction and adaptive re-use and renovations, with a focus in and around nationally registered historic districts. Every project we work on starts with, and is driven by, urban design and master planning. Given the historic nature of much of the context, much of the work is grounded in traditional and classical design principles; however, every project is unique and different stylistic approaches depending on the client and program are part of the firm’s approach. The firm‘s design approach is also heavily reliant on hand drawing and drafting to develop conceptual and schematic design, with digital modeling for conceptual and schematic development and visualization. Later phases of work are executed in Auto CAD and Revit primarily. We are fortunate to get to work on a lot of unique and interesting projects, and we’re looking for a talented designer with a range of digital and hand drawing skills to help us continue to grow. We are seeking an architectural design associate with 5+ years of experience. The ideal candidate will have experience with urban design/ master planning, architectural design, traditional/classical design and detailing, and other relevant design skills. Design work will include new construction and renovation projects, master planning, commercial, residential, and civic buildings. This position will be primarily focused on design and setting direction on projects, master planning, conceptual and schematic architectural design, and production of graphic submittals and presentations for client presentations and municipal design approvals. A range of experience will be considered for this role. Qualifications and Skills · Degree from a NAAB accredited architecture program · Licensed or pursuing licensure · Proficiency with hand drawing/drafting · Experience in traditional urban design concepts · Experience in traditional and classical architectural design · Graphic design, layouts, and presentation design · Proficiency with digital programs ( Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup, AutoCAD, Revit) · Ability to prioritize and execute tasks accurately, effectively, and confidently · Effective verbal and written communication skills · Understanding of: o Urban design/master planning o Design solution development o Building systems, detailing, and technology o Applicable codes, life safety requirements, regulations, and standards o Differing building types and project delivery methods o Programming and planning methods Responsibilities Include: · Assist in the development of architectural designs, including drafting, modeling, and rendering. · Design and production work for conceptual and schematic design phases. · Perform field verifications/measurements and travel to sites. · Develop graphic submittals and presentations for clients and municipal approvals. · Perform other assigned duties as deemed necessary by firm principal.
