Department The Department of Interior Architecture & Design at Florida State University announces an open faculty position. This position is for a nine-month tenure-earning Assistant or Associate Professor focused on teaching, research, and service. The appointment will begin in August 2024 with a nine-month academic contract.
Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified to teach undergraduate-level lighting technology courses, graduate-level seminar courses, upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level design studio(s), and other core curriculum courses in the candidate’s areas of specialty or interest. Qualified candidates must also demonstrate the ability to conduct academic research and/or engage in creative scholarship and advise students through the graduate thesis process. FSU offers opportunities for first-year assistant professor research funding in the first summer and subsequent summer teaching abroad.
The Department of Interior Architecture & Design is home to a vibrant and collegial work environment with eleven full-time faculty and approximately 200 students who enter through a rigorous selective-entry process. The program has been continuously CIDA accredited (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) since 1975. The Department imparts the values of human-centered design, evidence-based design processes, and creative and critical thinking so that students positively impact human health, safety, and well-being in the experiences and spaces they create. The Florida State University College of Fine Arts is a place where learning and creativity are nurtured through instruction, research, and practice. The College is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that functions as an art and design conservatory and liberal arts hybrid within a major research university. It is home to a unique combination of visual arts, performing arts, and design studios, classrooms, performance spaces, galleries, and a museum. The current student enrollment is approximately 850 undergraduate and 300 graduate students, working to become successful artists, designers, researchers, and professionals in their fields. The College comprises the School of Dance, the School of Theatre, the Department of Interior Architecture & Design, the Department of Art, the Department of Art Education, and the Department of Art History. It is supported by more than 100 full-time faculty, 50 adjunct faculty, 110 staff members, and a budget of approximately $19.3 million.
The College also houses several non-academic units, including the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA), the Facility for Arts Research (FAR), and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). Many of the College’s programs rank among the most respected in the nation and feature specialized programs that leverage relationships between departments and museums to enrich the degree-based curriculum.

Responsibilities 1.The ideal candidate will have the demonstrated ability to teach the following:
a.Undergraduate-level lighting design course.
b.Undergraduate upper-level design studio courses.
c.Graduate-level seminar courses.
d.Graduate-level design studio courses.
2.The ideal candidate will be able to mentor upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level students, and serve as a graduate thesis advisor and member of thesis committees;
3.The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to engage in scholarly work in any of the following areas:
a.Scholarship of design research.
b.Scholarship of teaching and learning.
c.Creative scholarship.
d.Seek external funding.
4.The ideal candidate will be active in service and demonstrate the potential to be an engaged colleague, scholar, and educator in the following areas:
a.Innovative teaching and curriculum development.
b.Service to further the mission and values of the Department.
c.Service to further the mission and values of the College and University.
d.Service to academic, professional or community organizations beyond FSU as appropriate.
Qualifications ·MFA (or equivalent terminal degree) in Interior Design or M.Arch.
·Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish research and/or creative scholarship.
·Demonstrated ability to use design-related technologies in teaching, practice, and/or scholarly work.
·Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
Preferred Qualifications · Ph.D. in Interior Design or Architecture, with five years of practice experience, and/or three years of teaching experience (Teaching Assistantship, part-time, and full-time experience all welcome).
·NCIDQ or NCARB certification, or another certification such as EDAC, LEED, or WELL.
