About this role
About Us: At Sims Exteriors & Remodeling, we believe exceptional remodeling starts with listening well, designing thoughtfully, and delivering on what we promise. We are a relationship-driven design-build remodeling company serving homeowners throughout the Dane County area. Our mission is to create beautiful, functional spaces while providing an experience built on trust, communication, craftsmanship, and accountability. We don't simply sell remodeling projects—we guide homeowners through one of the biggest investments they'll make in their home. Every member of our team plays an important role in delivering an exceptional client experience. Position Overview: This is more than a design position. We're looking for a professional who combines exceptional design skills with consultative selling, helping homeowners make confident decisions while guiding them through one of the most significant investments they'll make in their home. Success in this role comes from building trust, asking thoughtful questions, developing creative solutions, and leading clients confidently from initial consultation through signed agreement and into production. This role blends interior design, space planning, budgeting, and consultative sales for kitchens, baths, and other living spaces. Key Responsibilities: Meet with homeowners to understand their goals, lifestyle, design preferences, and functional challenges. Develop creative conceptual designs that improve both beauty and usability. Guide clients through our proprietary interactive budgeting process. Create space plans and construction drawings using Chief Architect. Assist clients with cabinetry, countertop, plumbing, lighting, flooring, tile, and finish selections within approved budgets. Refine conceptual designs into detailed construction-ready plans. Prepare proposals, scopes of work, pricing, and contracts. Serve as the primary client contact during design and pre-construction. Partner with production staff to ensure a smooth transition into construction. Stay engaged with clients throughout construction to help ensure expectations are being met. Collaborate closely with project managers, production staff, and fellow designers. Maintain accurate documentation within CRM and project management systems. Participate in team meetings, design reviews, continuing education, and process improvement initiatives. Build relationships through networking and community involvement. Qualifications & Skills: Experience designing kitchens, bathrooms, and residential remodeling projects within a design-build or remodeling environment. Working knowledge of products commonly used in residential remodeling, including cabinetry, countertops, flooring, tile, lighting, plumbing fixtures, appliances, decorative hardware, paint, and related finish materials. Ability to guide homeowners through product selections while balancing aesthetics, functionality, budget, and long-term value. Valid driver's license, reliable personal vehicle, and ability to travel to client homes, project sites, vendor showrooms, and networking events throughout our service area. Proven success in consultative sales. Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills. Experience using Chief Architect or comparable residential design software. Knowledge of residential construction methods and remodeling practices. Experience developing project budgets, allowances, and scopes of work. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong attention to detail and commitment to follow-through. What Success Looks Like: Curious and asks thoughtful questions before offering solutions. Takes ownership and follows through on commitments. Seeks feedback and continuously improves. Humble and coachable. Team-first mindset that builds others up. Growth mindset. Collaborative with clients, teammates, and trade partners. Communicates openly and professionally. Contributes to a positive, drama-free workplace.
